Ontario docs are leaving – patients have trouble finding good doctors

{June 11, 2012}   SERIOUS BACKLOG CPSO DISCIPLINE CASES

The following information comes directly from an employee at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Though perhaps public knowledge by now, some docs may still be wondering what has “happened” to their case.

The College is simply not equipped to handle the  large number of cases awaiting a Discipline Committee Hearing on time, if indeed at all. In its enthusiasm to justify its existence, the College appears to have outmanoeuvred itself.

Lawyers representing docs who request a date for their clients’ Hearing are informed that the College is inundated with cases and unable to set dates and that the docs may well have to wait years for their cases to be heard.

Some docs have left Ontario, not willing to have a “trial” hanging over their heads for a number of years, not knowing what the outcome will be and having to foot the bill for their own Hearing at the end of it all.

According to an unofficial spokesperson at the College:  “The whole thing is a mess !”.
